Archaeology - The Second Viking Treasure of Westerklief

The second Viking treasure of Westerklief (the replica of the first treasure is shown in the background).

In November 1999 a second silver treasure was found near Westerklief, less than 100 meters from where the famous first Viking treasure had been found.
The second silver treasure consisted of 165 grams of unminted silver (silver bars and "hack silver"), 20 Carolingian coins and also 62 Arabian coins or pieces of coin. The pieces of Arabian coin (36 pieces) are cut. The find is currently dated to about 875 A.D., 25 years later than the first treasure. The nature of the contents, specifically the presence of Arabian coins, suggests that, just as with the first treasure, this too is a Viking treasure.

On the following pages, you can read more about the different items in this treasure.
