Collection

"Het Huis van de Aarde" strives to present an authentic picture of everyday life inWieringen in the early Middle Ages.

Because of the local discovery of two silver Viking treasures, it will come as no surprise that the museum's emphasis is on the period of time during which the Vikings dominated this area. Come with us, as we travel back in time. You might even run into a 9th century Wieringer!

New exhibits

Thanks to the "Weg van de Vikingen" foundation ("Way of the Vikings") the museum was able to obtain two new exhibits in 2001. The first consists of a number of unique, early Middle Age implements, from brooches, buckles and ornaments, to a 9th century Viking battle-axe. The second exhibit, "The Multicultural Lowlands in the year 800", consists of a number of costumed dolls. For the average 9th century person, the world wasn't much larger than the town in which they lived. But in trade centres such as Dorestad, there was a constant stream of Frisians, Franks, and Vikings. Just like today, you could readily tell where people came from, and how they made their living, based on their clothing. Made by Geeske Kruseman from Arnhem, the dolls give us an idea of the various types of people found in the lowlands at the time. The doll collection was formerly on display at the Dorestad Museum in Wijk bij Duurstede.

For kids too!

Unlike most museums, touching is allowed,  which makes "het Huis van de Aarde" a great place to bring children. They'll enjoy every minute!
