Archaeology - The Second Viking Treasure of Westerklief
As with Westerklief 1, the second silver treasure contains a number of Carolingian coins. There are fewer (only 20 compared to 78 in the first treasure) but the difference is greater than just this. In the first treasure, the vast majority of coins (74) were Dorestad denarii.
This time, we have seven coins from Dorestad (see further), but the
remaining coins come from many different places: Milan, Cologne, Brugges,
and Aquitaine. The small coin is an "obol", half a denarius. What is also
striking is that there are coins from the realms of seven different kings
and kaisers, including the unified Frankish realm of Louis the Pious, and
from the three kingdoms of his sons. Why there are so many different coins
is not known.
