Archaeology - Other Viking Finds

Besides the two Viking treasures of Westerklief, other finds have been made in Wieringen that indicate the presence of Norsemen in this area during the 9th century.

Golden ring found in Stroe Near the village of Stroe (northeast of Westerklief) a beautiful gold ring was found. Its style is similar to common Scandinavian styles of the early Middle Ages. (Actually, the ring may even date to before the Viking period).

In Vatrop, Oosterklief and Westerland (each a village or area near Westerklief), another 6 Arabian coins have been found. Currently, there are about 75 old Arabian coins that have been found in the Netherlands, of which the vast majority were found in Wieringen. For more information about the contact between the Vikings and the Arabs, see this page. The heights of Westerklief also produced a beautiful golden button, made into the shape of a battle shield, similar to those used by the Vikings, complete with umbo (central knob).
